A new upgrade order in Chile for the Aftersales teams of John Cockerill

Engie Energía Chile's Tocopilla power plant in Chile

September 04th 2023

The growth of renewable energy in Chile is increasing the intermittency of the energy supply. As a consequence, combined cycle power stations designed for base load operation more than 20 years ago are facing a significant rise in cycling operation. This will help stabilize the electrical grid.

In this context, Engie Energía Chile has awarded the Aftersales teams of John Cockerill Energy with a contract for the repair and upgrade of a John Cockerill HRSG installed in 2000 at the Tocopilla power plant and initially designed for base load. Our scope of supply includes the reparation of its inlet duct and casing, the supply of a new reheat outlet header as well as the engineering and supply of a new casing expansion joint to favor the HRSG thermal expansion during cycling operation. The execution of these works is programmed for 2024.

The works undertaken by our experts will enable the HRSG and the power station to gain flexibility and efficiency. This upgrade will also help compensate the intermittency of renewable energies in generating electricity for the households of the region.
