John Cockerill is to give a second life to the power plant of Seraing (Belgium)

Luminus (EDF subsidiary) has awarded a new order to John Cockerill for the power plant of Seraing (Belgium). This is a contract for the detailed engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and construction of 2 diverters to be installed upstream the heat recovery boilers (HRSGs) designed and supplied by John Cockerill in 1993. The plant will be converted in open cycle and will operate in peak time, when the electricity demand is high.

John Cockerill proposed a unique, smart and competitive solution, which will result in a huge benefit for Luminus. The electricity producer will be able to use the existing gas turbines in open cycle with higher power output, i.e., with more produced megawatts, and with quicker start-up times and adapt more efficiently to peak electricity demand.

John Cockerill’s strength relies in offering turnkey solutions to enable power producers produce massive amounts of energy during peak time, i.e., when the network is under stress, typically when electricity consumption is higher than the production. It’s an excellent way of supporting the energy transition, as peak units are a perfect ally for the growing market penetration of renewable energies.

One of the many challenges of our After-sales team will be to organize the works in an extremely restricted area. The success of these works will imply to respect a rigorous sequencing of tasks to fulfill stringent safety rules.
