In keeping with its DNA, John Cockerill has regularly incorporated social and environmental concerns into its decisions and activities ever since the Group was privatised in 2002.
This natural dynamic, driven by our mission, is gradually accelerating with the pressure from society to address ESG issues (the international acronym for environmental, social and governance criteria). The transition to a low-carbon economy for our customers and ourselves is a priority.
In 2022, John Cockerill undertook a measurement of the carbon footprint of its sites which, by 2023, will cover all European activities.
The Group’s head office, which served as a test site for the development of the method, has launched actions to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions. These actions relate to the insulation of buildings, the choice and methods of supply of IT equipment, staff mobility and responsible eating. The next measurement should reveal the effectiveness of these actions, while new levers are identified. In 2023, John Cockerill will be taking significant action to reduce the carbon footprint of its car fleet.
The implementation of the fundamentals should enable John Cockerill to measure its environmental performance and achieve the targets set for compliance with ESG standards by 2025.
The Mission Statement details John Cockerill’s projects, indicators and commitments (2022, 2021, 2020, 2019).
In line with this ESG approach, John Cockerill is taking the necessary steps to obtain certification at ambition level 3 on the CO2 performance ladder.
Assessment and initial results
John Cockerill SA’s CO2 assessment for the reference year 2022 was carried out in partnership with Climact. This assessment covers a broader scope than that required for the CO2 performance ladder, as the CO2 assessment was carried out for several of the Group’s BU’s based in Europe which are not part of the organisational scope for certification on the CO2 performance ladder.
Action plan and support
Once a list of reduction measures has been drawn up, it is important to put in place an action plan to achieve the objectives of the measures. This must contain qualitative and quantitative indicators for reducing CO2 emissions.
Communication plan and initiatives
We need to ensure structured communication on our CO2 emissions reduction policy. A communication plan has been drawn up, setting out the resources to be deployed both internally and externally. The company also participates in industry initiatives aimed at reducing CO2 emissions.
