Designing and assembling a huge Hamon® air-cooled condenser for the Sun Ba II combined-cycle power plant in Taiwan
May 02nd 2024
With the Sun Ba II project, John Cockerill Hamon met Siemens Energy’s requirements much beyond all expectations in designing and assembling a huge air-cooled condenser for a combined-cycle power plant in Taiwan.
The 1100 MW Sun Ba II power station will boost Taiwan’s energy transition plan to move away from its dependence on coal and nuclear toward low-emitting, flexible gas-fired power generation, and other renewable power sources.
Our teams built this air-cooled condenser composed of 8 rows of 6 modules each, for a total of 48 modules in only 12 months. It usually takes twice as long to erect equipment of such a magnitude. This challenge was made possible thanks to an innovative way of erecting the modules that allowed to significantly reduce assembly time.
Siemens Energy said to be very satisfied and congratulated our teams for their “great fully integrated E3D design“. Indeed, John Cockerill Hamon’s Building Integrated Modelling (BIM), having the same tool environment than our customer’s, helped speed up the engineering phase.
The Hamon® design had also to meet seismic requirements and was reviewed and certified by a third party. Our innovation outstandingly proved its worth during Taiwan’s earthquake of April 2024.
With our client’s amazing erection team, an ad hoc assembly concept, and our outstanding design and supervision, John Cockerill Hamon was able to achieve this technical achievement in a key region for its business. A big up to all the teams who contributed to this great success!
