ArcelorMittal and John Cockerill to deploy the JVD® technology to Swedish steelmaker SSAB’s production

June 19th 2024

With the intended implementation of ArcelorMittal’s novel JVD® (Jet Vapor Deposition) steel strip coating technology in Swedish steelmaker SSAB’s steel production, the collaboration between ArcelorMittal and John Cockerill makes a major leap forward in the deployment of this innovative technology providing a multitude of advantages.

In a first step, John Cockerill will be conducting a preparation study to implement ArcelorMittal’s high-performance strip coating process, JVD® in SSAB’s downstream premium steel production. This advanced process technology owned and patented by ArcelorMittal, one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies, and exclusively commercialized by John Cockerill, applies metallic coatings by vaporizing zinc under vacuum onto a moving steel strip to support a more sustainable steel production.

The JVD® technology is expected to allow SSAB to make efficiency gains all while providing unprecedented coating flexibility which is especially true for AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) as has proven the world’s first industrial line, owned by ArcelorMittal. This JVD® line located at ArcelorMittal’s plant in Kessales (Belgium), has to date produced over 1 million tons of high-quality Zn coated steel strip including Advanced High Strength Steel products under the JETGAL® and JETSKIN® brands.

John Cockerill is proud to be part of this project, epitome of cleaner and stronger steelmaking by using innovative processes with the goal to support societies as they transform through this century.
