MiRIS, John Cockerill’s green energy production & storage hub

Do you know MiRIS? MiRIS is a green energy integrated system combining renewables production & energy storage installed since 2018 at John Cockerill’s industrial site, in Seraing, Belgium. Composed of a 2 MW PV photovoltaic plant installed on a surface of 10,000 m² of rooftops and carports, 2 types of batteries (Lithium-ion LFP, Redox Flow) and electric vehicles chargers, MiRIS is run and managed by an energy management system (EMS), developed in-house by John Cockerill. Last year the hub received the visit of more than 300 persons active in the energy, the industry, or politics.

MiRIS is an industrial micro-grid fully designed by John Cockerill experts to produce, store and auto-consume electricity. It is connected to the grid to inject power or render grid services (FCR, aFRR) upon the needs to grid frequency. The plant has been operating for 6 years and is a unique platform to enhance John Cockerill expertise, test new technologies (i.e. Sodium-Sulfur battery) and the EMS functionalities, show case a proven industrial reference, …

In 2022, the MiRIS site produced 1978 MWh of green electricity and enabled John Cockerill to benefit from 56% of self-consumed electricity, avoiding thereof to emit 230 tons of CO2. In 2023, the self-consumption reached 64%. With MiRIS, John Cockerill acts more sustainably, produces renewable energy and develops the solution that meets the need of our clients in their decarbonization journey.
