Maintenance Contract for DEWA’s Battery Energy Storage System in Dubai

May 13th 2025

In the United Arab Emirates, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is implementing the 6th phase of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, where John Cockerill previously installed a thermal solar receiver, capturing solar energy to convert it into green electricity, contributing to sustainable energy production.

The 7th phase of the project will boost the park’s planned production capacity from 3,660 MW to 7,260 MW by 2030, increasing the share of clean energy in Dubai’s energy mix to 34%, surpassing the initial target of 25%.

The Park also hosts DEWA’s Research & Development Center and a 1.2 MW / 7.2 MWh sodium/sulfur NAS battery energy storage system (BESS) to test batteries and green hydrogen technologies. DEWA has awarded John Cockerill a 2-year contract for maintenance and support of the NGK NAS BESS, owned, tested, and operated by DEWA’s R&D Center at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park since 2018.

Our team will maintain and upgrade the supervisory control and data acquisition systems, modernizing hardware, software, and network infrastructure. DEWA can rely on John Cockerill’s technological expertise in battery energy storage systems technologies, honed at our MIRIS plant in Belgium, where our experts have been implementing, testing, and operating various technologies, including NAS BESS from NGK.

John Cockerill is proud to expand its presence in the Middle East, leveraging its expertise in maintaining advanced BESS, particularly the NAS BESS, ideal for the most challenging and hot environments.
