Access to low-carbon energy: John Cockerill acquires the assets of AUSAR Energy

April 28th 2025

In 2022, John Cockerill acquired 51% of the shares of the French company AUSAR Energy. Earlier this month, John Cockerill completed the acquisition, integrating AUSAR Energy‘s assets into the Group and its employees joined our organization.

This acquisition aligns seamlessly with John Cockerill’s ambition to facilitate access to renewable energy and decarbonize industries in remote areas, in Africa for example. Both teams are indeed specialized in designing and developing off-grid and mini-grid solutions, providing low-carbon, cost-effective power to remote areas by hybridizing gensets with photovoltaics, battery energy storage systems, associated to an in-house Energy Management System.

AUSAR Energy delivered 2 microgrids in Djibouti for the national utility EDD (Electricité De Djibouti). These microgrids are equipped with 3MWp photovoltaics, 4MWh battery storage and a Plant Management System. Beyond this project, John Cockerill has a promising pipeline for MW-scale microgrid projects in several African countries facing harsh conditions, such as sandy environments, extreme heat, and drought.

John Cockerill aims at deploying its microgrid and off-grid solutions all over the globe. This acquisition completes the renewable energy and circular solutions portfolio of John Cockerill Energy, which includes green power, green heat, long duration energy storage, microgrids and waste-to-product. We wish welcome to our colleagues within the John Cockerill family, and we are pleased to combine our strengths to offer communities a brighter future.
